šišky Recipe

These delicious, fried doughnuts are pronounced “Shish”ky, and I remember Pauline making these as a special treat for us. They were popped into our mouths almost as soon as they came out of the hot oil.


2 eggs

1 tablespoon sugar

1 package instant yeast

½ L milk – room temperature

A bit of salt

A bit of flour (well, I added 2 1/2 cups, and that still wasn’t enough)

Canola Oil (Pauline used lard, which probably tasted better. I would try peanut oil)

Powered sugar, sifted


  1. Mix together the yeast, milk and sugar, and proof.
  2. Once the yeast is proven, add beaten eggs, a pinch of salt, and mix
  3. Slowly add a little flour at a time so that the dough isn’t too sticky
  4. Let the dough rise in a covered bowl at room temperature until double, about 1 hour
  5. After an hour of rising, roll the dough into a log, and let rise another 30-40 min
  6. Cut the log into small pieces, about 1-2 inches thick (or roll into balls)
  7. Heat the oil in a tall pot
  8. Drop the dough balls into the hot oil
  9. When golden (only a minute or so), remove from the oil
  10. Dust with powdered sugar
  11. Devour soon

    This is in slovakian. So your grandmam was from slovakia. which part of Slovakia , do you know?

      One branch of my family immigrated from one part of the Hungarian Empire (what is now Slovakia) to another – Vojvodina, over 260 years ago. After WWI, Vojvodina became part of what is now Serbia. Another branch comes from Dolny Kubin in the Orava region, and others from Bratislava. And yours?

        Hello fellow Slovaks! My grandparents Immigrated to USA in1896 – 1900. Grandfather came first, wife stayed in Slovakia, Grandmother came in 1899 she was only 19 yrs old! The Eastern region Hummene, the village she came from is Myslina and he from Gruzovce’. I have been there twice, and i cry when I arrive and I cry when I leave. I have her rolling pin she brought with her to America. I am happy to read your site hear and thank you for sharing ! Long live Slovakia and its culture and her delicious culinary

    have you ever made these type of doughnuts with prune filling or a prune inside? My Grandmother was Czech, but I am sure they are to different…?

    I would like to travel to Eastern Slovakia again, how can i find a good traveling partner who knows the language well? today I am making Holubky, as my mother and Baba use to make:) I really enjoy your site Paulina, I have a cousin Paulina in Myslina!
